The most common side effect of topical minoxidil is dryness, itching, stinging, scaling, flaking, or redness. Minoxidil cannot be used for frontal baldness nor can it be used if your scalp is already irritated, or you have a rash or sunburn on your scalp. Minoxidil applied to the scalp is used to stimulate hair growth in both adult men and women with a certain type of baldness but does not work well for hair loss that is old or covers a large area but is ideal/works best when used at the first sign of hair loss. Minoxidil does not work on hair loss that is due to medications, nutritional problems, or medical conditions.

If hair growth is going to occur with the use of minoxidil, it usually occurs after the medicine has been used for several months and lasts only as long as the medicine continues to be used. Minoxidil is not a permanent solution for hair fall can be seen once minoxidil is discontinued.
